I turned this piece on my lathe with hand tools with the idea of creating a bowl and still have it maintain a square object. The bowl starts at the four corners and then goes up where I added a texture affect to capture the eye and draw it into the round of the bowl. Bubinga is a very dense wood with great color. To make the most of this I sanded to 1000 grit and then finished with a shellac oil combination. The goal was to create a center piece for your home or office that would capture the eye and not overwhelm the area. I think that you will appreciate how well this piece of wood turned out.
the piece is 8" x 8" x 1 1/2" and weighs 11 oz.
Bubinga heartwood ranges from a pinkish red to a darker reddish brown with darker purple or black streaks. An immensely popular imported African hardwood, Bubinga may be loved as much for its quirky name as it is for its strength and beauty. Bubinga has a close resemblance to rosewood, and is often use in place of more expensive woods. Yet Bubinga also features a host of stunning grain figures, such as flamed, pommele, and waterfall, which make this wood truly unique. Bubinga also has an exceptional strength-to-weight ratio.
