The bowl was turned on my lathe with hand tools from figured maple. The design intent was to create a large salad bowl that would serve a large family or a party at your home. I included a lip on the outside to assist in handling the bowl. This bowl is also large enough and strong enough to be what was known as a dough bowl. My Grandmother used one very similar to make bread with. She would put the dough in the bowl, cover it with a hand towel and let it rise. Several times when you would think that it was about done, she would take the towel off and punch the dough down. After doing this several times she would put it in her wood fired oven and bake bread like no one else could ever do. Sorry for the memory sidetrack, I loved my Grandma.
Back to the bowl. It is sanded to 600 grit and finished with 5 coats of hand rubbed walnut oil and carnuba wax.
The bowl is 12 1/2" in diameter, 4 3/4" tall and weighs 2 lbs 2.7 oz.
